Greg, here's some thoughts on this. The Smiths unit has numbers on it. Mine has FT/5300/45. This style of sending unit is pretty common on British cars but I have never been able to figure out just what car this was originally used on. Or maybe Trojan specs just for Mk3 tank? Anyway I'm thinking that the resistor units 5300 are all the same and the suffix number is the length/configuration of the float. So if you bought one of these (new on ebay) you could modify the wire length to be the same as what you have (assuming that it is still there). Also notice your fuel gauge is adjustable at both full and empty readings at the terminals on the backside. So what could go wrong?
You should be able to find this link on ebay easily.
